1. Be proud of where you came from.

Our Mom grew up on a farm, and as much we tease her about being farm-girl strong (this woman has literally moved large furniture on her own before), we also admire her for it. She has always believed that who she is today is because of where she came from. She’s proud of her background and how she was raised, and she has always instilled in us to do the same.

2. What other people think of you is none of your business.

This lesson has always been a big one for me. As someone who can sometimes worry about how I am perceived by others, it’s also been a tough one to learn. But our Mom has always encouraged us to stay focused on our self and not to worry about the opinions of others.

3. The importance of being an independent woman.

Our Mom hustles! She has taught us that you have to work for what you want, and I swear she must have co-wrote the song Independent Women by Destiny’s Child. She believes in 50/50 relationships as well as buying what you need for yourself when you want to.

4. You are what you think.

Positive thoughts are something that our Mom always encourages in our household. We have been taught that your inner thoughts can influence your life in a big way! You can quite literally bring about what you think about, so always look for that silver lining, even in a negative situation.

5. You only get one body.

I have always looked to my Mom for guidance when it comes to nutrition, exercise and skin care. She has always taught us to value our body and the skin we are in. Leading by example, our Mom has always taught us proper nutrition and self care. Each day she reminds us how important it is to look after yourself.

These lessons alongside her guidance, support, and constant encouragement for us to be the best versions of ourselves are the reasons why I know that my sister and I will be successful in life. But this one not only goes out to our Mom but all the Mommas who are working hard and hustling for their families. Thank you for all that you do.

Yours truly,

Melissa Alyse
